100 Day Song Challenge Day 6

A novelty song.

Here we have Danish band Cartoons with their cover of David Seville's 'Witch Doctor'. I've never actually heard the original that I know of so I thought I'd stick with the version I know.

Now there were so many songs that could have been used for this question but I'm sure I'll be able to use at least a couple in other questions down the line.

100 Day Song Challenge Day 5

Firstly a quick apology for the absence work has been kicking my ass with overtime. I have finished a book and almost finished another since my last book review but as it's a trilogy I'm planning on doing a combi review for all three. Now on to the music!

A song a friend likes but you don't.

So I don't actually know enough about my friends music tastes to know what they definitively like or don't but everyone seems to like 'Single Ladies' by Beyonce and I just find it annoying. I'm not a fan of hers, her music isn't to my taste and like a lot of singers she comes across as an arrogant diva.

Although if I am going to listen to the song this version by the Glee cast is probably one of my top TV moments, shame they went with the damaging outing storyline and wrecked it for me. From what I heard I don't think it improved much after that. *sigh*

100 Day Song Challenge Day 4

A song you can remember your parents listening to.

Dolly Parton - 'Nine to Five'. I don't really remember my mum listening to music in general but she's a pretty big country fan so I thought a bit of Dolly would suit this question.

100 Day Song Challenge Day 3

A song that reminds you of a night out. When was it and where?

Aiden - 'One Love'. I saw them live in concert at the Bristol Academy October 2008. That was the first and so far only gig I've been to. I went with one friend and met another there, it was a brilliant night and that particular location was even the focus of Kerrang magazine's gig review, I actually have it stuck in a scrapbook.

Book Review: The Leaving by Tara Altebrando

This was an odd book. A quote on the cover basically said that it was unputdownable but I found it very easy to put down.

The characters were OK, very little personality even in the ones whose memory hadn't been altered. The plot was intriguing but everything moved very slowly. THe action only takes place over a just over a week yet a lot of the time it seemed longer. I wish it had focused more on the other victims as well. The scene where Scarlett visits Adam fell a little flat, plus there was an unnecessary passage about his little sisters.

The ending seemed very rushed and incomplete and there was one moment with Kristen that if they weren't going to follow through then it just shouldn't have been mentioned. Queer baiting is something that the LBGT community deal with way too often and frankly we're sick of it. I wasn't going to speak so outright as it may count as a spoiler but I don't care. Informing people should come first.

2/5 stars.

Happy Birthday Forest!

So my Borzoi puppy Forest (Ryazan Fingal) turned 1 today! 31.4kg (69lbs) at last weigh in at 11 months. No idea how to measure the height of something that won't stand still but definitely over 30 inches tall. Hard to imagine he's gone from the sad eyed little thing with the wiggly tail below...

Smol pup!

We thought he was getting big here LOL! And so little fur. But his tail was touching the floor :D and his butt spot was basically invisible.

I has a stick! Tiny bit more fluff...

POOF! I'm fluffy now! And actually big!

Proud in the park, all curly fluff!

Can I haz biscuit? Hint: Yes he can LOL! The other day.

And now here we are, a whole year old! He's lucky to have survived really. It's surprising how small he can curl himself up, the bed was actually an Aldi find and he's lying on two pillows. Typical mind, give him a duvet and he'll destroy it in days, the pillows he's had for a while now and they're still intact, probably need a wash though... He's booked in for his big op next month. Some might reckon it's too early but one of mum's conditions of getting a male dog was that he'd have the snip ASAP. She thought that was 6 months but they've changed it to a year plus. We want to prevent any humping before it happens and we're hoping it'll dampen his hyper-focus on other dogs. Fingers crossed!

Here's to many more years!

100 Day Song Challenge Day 2

A song from the first album you ever bought. What was the album?

Maroon 5 - 'Sunday Morning'.

From the album Songs About Jane. One of the first albums I bought myself with my own money when I was just starting to get into rock/alternative music.

Book Review: Love, Hate and Other Filters by Samira Ahmed

This was a good book but overall I wanted more. I really liked Maya as a character and I thought the Indian stuff was fascinating - though a glossary might have been handy - I also didn't realise quite how overprotective Indian parents were! Though other reviews lead me to believe Maya's were at the more extreme end.

Both potential relationships were cute and would have worked well, neither were obviously bad though there was an awful lot of the fluffy romance stuff throughout the whole book. The terrorism plot had potential but it's timing and the pacing within the story were a little awkward. I liked the mid chapters though and I would have loved more detail there.

I loved Hina and Violet and wanted to see more of them. The racism was important and interesting but it seemed like an afterthought, nothing then everything. Maya didn't show much of her culture personally, if you took her out and put her in a different book without specifying you'd barely be able to tell she was Indian, never mind Muslim. Her religion was mentioned more in passing regarding her parents praying after the attack, it felt a little hollow. I wish we could have seen more of the ending in New York, it needed to be longer. Did Maya resolve things with her parents?

3/5 stars.

100 Day Song Challenge Day 1

A song you know all the lyrics to:

My memory is too rubbish to truly say I know any song's lyrics in full but I think Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody' comes closest. For anyone who's struggling here's a reminder:
Is this the real life?
Is this just fantasy?
Caught in a landslide,
No escape from reality.

Open your eyes,
Look up to the skies and see,
I'm just a poor boy, I need no sympathy,
Because I'm easy come, easy go,
Little high, little low,
Any way the wind blows doesn't really matter to me, to me.

Mama, just killed a man,
Put a gun against his head,
Pulled my trigger, now he's dead.
Mama, life had just begun,
But now I've gone and thrown it all away.

Mama, ooh,
Didn't mean to make you cry,
If I'm not back again this time tomorrow,
Carry on, carry on as if nothing really matters.

Too late, my time has come,
Sends shivers down my spine,
Body's aching all the time.
Goodbye, everybody, I've got to go,
Gotta leave you all behind and face the truth.

Mama, ooh (any way the wind blows),
I don't wanna die,
I sometimes wish I'd never been born at all.

I see a little silhouetto of a man,
Scaramouche, Scaramouche, will you do the Fandango?
Thunderbolt and lightning,
Very, very frightening me.
(Galileo) Galileo.
(Galileo) Galileo,
Galileo Figaro
Magnifico-o-o-o-o.

I'm just a poor boy, nobody loves me.
He's just a poor boy from a poor family,
Spare him his life from this monstrosity.

Easy come, easy go, will you let me go?
Bismillah! No, we will not let you go. (Let him go!)
Bismillah! We will not let you go. (Let him go!)
Bismillah! We will not let you go. (Let me go!)
Will not let you go. (Let me go!)
Never let you go (Never, never, never, never let me go)
Oh oh oh oh
No, no, no, no, no, no, no
Oh, mama mia, mama mia (Mama mia, let me go.)
Beelzebub has a devil put aside for me, for me, for me.

So you think you can stone me and spit in my eye?
So you think you can love me and leave me to die?
Oh, baby, can't do this to me, baby,
Just gotta get out, just gotta get right outta here.

(Ooooh, ooh yeah, ooh yeah)

Nothing really matters,
Anyone can see,
Nothing really matters,
Nothing really matters to me.

Any way the wind blows.

P.S. I've decided to do this posts on a Wednesday and a Friday so it doesn't take me more than a year to complete it.
